The Daybed Quest ends...

The long quest for a daybed (over a year now) comes to an end. Last night the Indonesian daybed I discovered on Craigslist was delivered and Tony and I spent the better part of an hour, huffing and cursing to put it together. The bed came in 7 pieces and had to be assembled like a giant puzzle. Ingenious in design, it has a beautiful patina and is put together with dowels holding the whole thing together, so it took us awhile to figure out which piece went where. But in the end it is a beautiful piece of furniture and makes for a very comfortable bed. The price was right, the style understated and elegant and not too overtly designed, and for my first experience with Craigslist it turned out rather well. I am happy with the purchase and with how seamless the process was to purchase it.

On our continued search for items required for our new home we made a trip to IKEA to scope out ideas and source possibilities (we are still searching for inexpensive window treatments and found some nice blinds that are an option if we cannot find anything else). Because the house is a renovated Victorian worker's cottage there is a dearth of closet space. I have no closet in my bedroom and instead use one in the hallway while Tony has a built-in that was roughed in during an 80's renovation. It is large, awkward and doesn't suit the room at all. Tony had been thinking about IKEA armoires (the brown-black PAX/Komplement system) and when we looked at them at IKEA I had to agree they had some that could work in the space and make it more usable. It would mean ripping out the existing closets, which could mean having to deal with what is behind or under the construction but it would be an improvement. It would also mean more space in the room with the awkward closet removed and although the IKEA armoires are not strictly Victorian in style having armoires is. The wonder of IKEA is that it never ceases to encourage new ways of thinking about design and creativity.
